On April 3, 2025, key figures from Nigeria’s music industry gathered for a special Headies premiere event at the residence of the Acting United States Consular General. The dinner brought together prominent music executives, media personalities, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Tourism, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, to celebrate the return of the prestigious Headies Awards to Nigeria after two years abroad.
In her speech, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka highlighted that Afrobeats is one of Nigeria’s most important global exports, with Lagos State proud to host the country’s top music awards. Acting Consul General JoEllen Gorg also praised the global success of Afrobeats, especially in the United States, where Nigerian stars like Burna Boy have sold-out major venues, further cementing the genre’s worldwide influence.
The 17th edition of the Headies Awards, titled “Back To Base,” promises to be bigger and better, according to Executive Producer Mr. Ayo Animashahun. The award ceremony will honor excellence in Nigerian music, showcasing the best talent from across the country.
Rising star Taves and singer Brown Joel were also present, with Joel performing his latest single ‘More Money’ alongside socialite-turned-musician Cubana Chief Priest.
