Tope Alabi Responds to Critics About Personal Style Choices
Gospel singer Tope Alabi has addressed critics who questioned her fashion choices, clarifying that her personal style is not a result of divine instruction, but rather a reflection of her own preferences and circumstances. In a candid livestream, Alabi opened up about her love for beauty and fashion, revealing that early in her career, financial limitations influenced her more minimalist look.

Alabi explained, “I love beauty and fashion, but I don’t have the money for it. God has never once told me never to wear earrings, necklaces, or wigs, never.” She further clarified that her decision to cover her hair in church was a personal choice and not a religious directive. “The hair that I cover in church was never under God’s direction. I did that under my own initiative, it was intentional. I told myself that anywhere I want to minister, I would cover my hair unless I’m called to sing impromptu when I’m wearing my wig.”
The singer also addressed concerns about her use of jewelry, particularly her occasional choice to forgo earrings. Alabi explained that her appearance is often tailored to match the theme of her music videos. “If you see me in any video where I’m not wearing earrings, just know it is because I decided not to because the meaning of the song does not warrant earrings,” she said. “I’m a theater practitioner to the core, so I know what look fits each song.”
Alabi reflected on her earlier career, explaining that her choice of smaller earrings was not due to preference but necessity. “Back then, people used to see me eating small earrings, they just didn’t know that I only wore smaller earrings because I couldn’t afford big ones. I also considered the theme of the video shoot and the location. Do suffering people wear earrings?” she added.
As a theater practitioner, Alabi emphasized her understanding of how visual elements contribute to the storytelling of her music. Her remarks underscore the importance of artistic expression in her career, making it clear that her fashion choices are personal and serve a greater purpose in her music and ministry.
