Selena Gomez Discusses the Struggles Women Face in Entertainment: Appearance, Identity, and Online Scrutiny

Written by on March 26, 2025

Award-winning singer and actress Selena Gomez shared personal insights into the challenges women face in the entertainment industry, particularly when it comes to public scrutiny of appearance, identity, and relationships. Gomez’s honest conversation shed light on the disproportionate pressure placed on women in Hollywood, offering a raw look at how constant criticism impacts her well-being.

She explained how women’s emotions about their appearance are often magnified in ways that men rarely experience. “Women have it much worse in the industry. I think from my perspective, it’s pretty wild. It’s not news to anyone that women have more intense feelings about their appearance and what they’re wearing,” Gomez shared.

Gomez also discussed the impact of weight-related comments, expressing how they contribute to her sadness. She acknowledged the guilt she feels for admitting these emotions but stressed that she is not a victim. “The character gets judged; it’s the way I’m not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough, and I don’t know there are so many things that come up in my face that I can’t help but see,” she explained. She added that while it can be difficult to avoid negative commentary, it often brings no value to her life.

The singer-actress also drew attention to the unequal treatment between men and women in the industry, particularly when it comes to relationships. “It’s just so difficult from the choices of the people you date yet nobody cares when it comes to men,” Gomez said, pointing out the double standards that exist in how the public perceives women’s relationships versus men’s.

She admitted, however, that the constant pressure can lead to feelings of bitterness. “Everyone just has something to say, and it’s making me sad… but it’s making me a tad bitter. I feel guilty for saying that, but it’s true,” she revealed.

To manage the emotional strain, Gomez shared her approach to self-care, which includes taking breaks from social media. While acknowledging the power and influence of social media, Gomez stressed the importance of finding a balance and tuning out negativity. “I’m just happy that I take breaks completely at times, but I’m human, and sometimes I read things. But most of the time, I ignore these things. There are ways to combat it,” she said.

Her message resonates with many who face similar struggles in the digital age, and Gomez’s openness about her challenges serves as a reminder of the importance of self-care and mental health, even for those in the limelight.
