Nigerian Filmmakers Chosen for 2024 ACTV Residency

Written by on July 15, 2024

Nigerian filmmakers Fatimah Gimsay, Isioma Osaje, Temidayo Makanjuola, and Stephanie Dadet will participate in a month-long filmmaker residency organized by African Creative TV (ACTV). They will attend the program in person in Los Angeles, California.

This residency, conducted in collaboration with the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, stems from the 2022 Africa Leaders Summit initiated by US President Joe Biden.

It aims to mentor TV professionals from Africa by pairing them with American TV writers, producers, and industry experts. The program will run from July 8 to August 8, 2024.

Participants will engage in sessions focused on professional growth and networking opportunities. Gimsay and Makanjuola were selected as headwriters, whereas Osaje and Dadet were chosen as producers.

Gimsay has earned renown for her contributions to Africa Magic’s writer’s rooms, working on notable productions like Tinsel, Riona, Ijo, The Covenant, Unbroken, Game On, and Enahke.

Makanjuola has earned a celebration not only for his work on Netflix series such as Blood Sisters, Money Men Marriage, and Dust to Dreams but also for his significant contributions to African television.

His impact extends beyond screenwriting to shaping narratives across various media platforms in Africa.

Osaje has produced films like Japa, Up North, The Set Up, Quam’s Money, and Chief Daddy. Dadet’s portfolio includes producing Africa Magic series like Sin, Halita, and Unscripted, and she recently made her directorial debut with the film Alli Eid Dinner.

Other selected African filmmakers include Chinaka Iwunze (South Africa), Mono Ombogo (Kenya), Jennifer Gatero (Kenya), Gwydion Beynon (South Africa), Lwazi Mvusi (South Africa), Nandisa Mkize (South Africa), Becky Muikia (Kenya), Phathu Makwarela (South Africa), Meren Reddy (South Africa), Tosh Gitonga (Kenya), and Toni Kamau (Kenya).
