He explained, “I have been in this industry for this long. I thank God that I can eat three square meals. But can I claim to be a rich man by Nigerian standards? No.” His statement sheds light on the challenges faced by many actors in the Nigerian movie industry, despite their popularity and experience.
Kosoko, who began his acting career in 1964 as a child actor in the television production Makanjuola, has starred in hundreds of Nollywood films in both English and Yoruba languages. Though comfortable, he emphasized that his financial situation does not align with what many would expect from a celebrated figure in the industry.
The seasoned actor also touched on the pervasive issue of piracy in the Nigerian film industry, which he believes has had a detrimental effect on the earnings of filmmakers. He called for stronger penalties for pirates, stating, “The punishment in the copyright law for piracy is still not strong enough as far as I am concerned.” Kosoko argued that pirates, who have profited immensely from the theft of intellectual property, often get away with minimal consequences. He suggested harsher penalties, including long prison sentences, to deter criminal activity. “If you attach a 20-year jail sentence to it with no option of a fine, people will refrain from piracy,” he said.
Kosoko’s remarks highlight the ongoing struggles in Nollywood, where piracy continues to undermine the financial stability of actors and filmmakers alike. Despite these challenges, the legendary actor remains a cornerstone of the Nigerian film industry, with a career that spans more than 60 years.
