Jaywon Advises Celebrities to Grow a Thick Skin to Handle Social Media Trolls
Afrobeats singer Jaywon has shared his thoughts on how celebrities can effectively handle the constant trolling they face on social media. According to the star, one of the best ways to deal with online negativity is to develop a “thick skin”—a trait he believes is essential for anyone navigating the Nigerian music industry.
In a candid message shared on his X handle on Sunday, Jaywon emphasized that the Nigerian music industry is “not for the weak.” He pointed out that even top superstars like Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy are regularly targeted by trolls, underscoring that any artist who isn’t prepared for criticism won’t survive in the spotlight.
“Some of my colleagues call me to chat about the current state of the industry and how I handle all the ranting and disrespect online. My response is always the same: today’s industry is not for the weak,” Jaywon wrote. He went on to emphasize that social media can be a harsh place for artists, but they must push forward despite the challenges. “Just look at the level of disrespect thrown at artists like Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and many others on social media. If you’re not prepared, you won’t last.”
The singer urged his fellow artists not to retreat from social media due to online negativity. Instead, he encouraged them to use these platforms to promote their music and connect with fans. “They will always come for you, and the only real escape is to go offline, but we can’t do that. This is our life, our craft, and no matter what, we will keep pushing forward!” he added.
