‘I Feel Whole’: Darkoo Shares Happiness After Coming Out

Written by on September 26, 2024

British-Nigerian singer Darkoo has opened up about coming out to her Nigerian parents as a lesbian and their reactions.

In a recent interview on ‘The Appointment Show’ with Layo, Darkoo shared her journey of revealing her truth to her family.

She expressed relief after telling her mother, saying, “The day I told my mum, I felt a massive weight off my shoulders. I’ve been happy since then.” She noted that she feels more content now that everyone in her professional life knows who she is.

Darkoo explained that while sharing her truth was more challenging with her mother due to their close bond, her father’s reaction was somewhat easier, though he wasn’t fully open to the conversation. “It was harder with my mum because I’m closer to her, and it was very emotional.

My dad didn’t want to have the conversation, but he didn’t stop it either,” she said.

She emphasized that, regardless of her parents’ beliefs, she is living authentically. “This is what makes me happy. I feel whole, and I’m not faking it. This is me. I have a good relationship with God, and my heart is clean and pure,” Darkoo continued.

While her Nigerian parents may not fully align with her sexuality, she feels their love and acceptance.

“I bring girls home, and my parents don’t mind. They love me for who I am. I know they don’t think what I’m doing is right because they’re African, but they love me, and that’s what matters,” she concluded.
