Two first half goals were enough for Jurgen Klopp’s men to grab a win against Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton at St. Marys. An error filled start to the game saw the home team gift the advantage to their opponents. Wesley Hoedt missed a simple clearance after Oxlade-Chamberlain played a long ball towards Salah. The Egyptian collected the pass after Hoedt’s error and squared it to Roberto Firminho who finished with ease for his 12th league goal of the campaign.
The Saints improved after going behind and forced a couple of saves from Loris Karius. However, towards the end of the half, the Reds doubled their advantage with a beautifully worked goal. Salah received a pass from Matip at the top of the box and played a delightful one-two with Firminho before beating the goalkeeper with a left-footed drive. The goal was all about the assist as Firminho held off the defender and back-heeled the ball into the path of his teammate.
After the break, the hosts were rather less effective going forward and Liverpool saw the game out with minimal fuss. They fielded al thee fir ex-Southampton players in their ranks (5) en-rote to victory.
Liverpool are now 2 points behind United at 3rd place (54th) while the Saints slipped to 18th place(26 pts).
