Austria’s movie entry, ‘Joy’ for international feature film category in the #Oscars2020 has been disqualified for having too much English content

The movie, ‘Joy’ which is Austria’s submission for international feature film is a movie that is based on Nigerian sex workers in Vienna.

The Academy’s rule of entries for international feature film remains strongly upheld as the same rule has struck out Austria’s submission.

Entries must feature “a predominantly non-English dialogue track,” per Academy rules, but a review found that two-thirds of Austria’s entry is in English.

Recall that, Nigeria’s ‘Lion Heart‘submission for the same category also suffered the same misfortune recently and even though it sparked a lot of debate the Academy rule remains.

But, fans are however calling for a review of the rule “an international film is defined as a feature-length motion picture (defined as over 40 minutes) produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.”  as countries should be able to determine and submit the movies that best represent them.
