Kunle Afolayan Clarifies Netflix Comments Amid Controversy on Nigerian Movies
Renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has addressed the recent controversy surrounding his comments about Netflix’s funding of Nigerian original movies. Afolayan clarified that his statement had been misinterpreted, emphasizing that he did not suggest Netflix is exiting Nigeria.
Misunderstanding Over Netflix’s Role in Nigerian Film Industry
In his interview, Afolayan explained that he was not implying Netflix’s departure from the Nigerian market. Instead, he stressed the importance of creating local distribution platforms for Nigerian films, rather than relying solely on international streaming services like Netflix. Afolayan’s comments were taken out of context, as he advocated for Nigerian filmmakers to explore alternative channels for distributing their content.
He further clarified that Netflix had reassured him and other filmmakers of their ongoing support for Nigerian content, though with some adjustments to their operational structure.
Afolayan’s Call for Local Distribution Platforms
Afolayan highlighted that, while Netflix is scaling down its operations in certain areas, Nigerian filmmakers should focus on building homegrown distribution platforms. He pointed to the example of filmmakers sharing content on platforms like YouTube as a way to foster local growth.
“The last time they were here, we had a meeting, and they reassured us that they are still committed to Nigerian films, even if the volume may not be as high as before,” he said.
Netflix’s Continued Support for Nigerian Content
Netflix has responded to Afolayan’s concerns, affirming that they are not exiting Nigeria and will continue to invest in Nigerian stories. “We are not exiting Nigeria. We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories to delight our audience,” Netflix stated.
Afolayan’s clarification highlights the need for diverse distribution channels in Nigeria’s rapidly growing film industry, ensuring sustainable growth and visibility for Nigerian filmmakers.
