Billie Eilish Reacts to Trump’s Victory: ‘It’s a War on Women’

Written by on November 7, 2024

Billie Eilish has expressed her dismay over Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, using her platform to speak out about the challenges women face under his potential second term. After Trump’s win became official, the singer took to Instagram Stories on November 6 to share her reaction with her 120 million followers. Over a stark black background, Eilish wrote in bold letters, ‘It’s a war on women.’

Her statement comes amid mounting concerns over reproductive rights in the United States, especially in light of Trump’s stance on abortion. During the September presidential debate, Trump dodged a direct question about supporting a national abortion ban, while his running mate, JD Vance, stated that Trump would veto such a ban. At the same time, Trump has frequently praised the Supreme Court and federal judges who have upheld abortion bans in several states.

Although Trump won the presidency and Republicans gained control of the Senate, the 2024 election also saw several states take measures to protect abortion rights. Seven states—Arizona, Colorado, New York, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, and Nevada—passed laws to safeguard abortion access, while three states—Florida, South Dakota, and Nebraska—voted to impose further restrictions.

Eilish’s comments follow her active campaign support for Vice President Kamala Harris. Over the past two months, the singer has been a vocal advocate for Harris, encouraging her fans to support the VP in her bid for the presidency. At a concert in Atlanta just days before the election, Eilish paused her performance to urge her audience to vote for Harris, saying, “Times are scary, and a lot is at stake. If you support me, you support women.”

Eilish’s message underscores her ongoing commitment to defending women’s rights, especially as the country faces a potentially hostile shift in leadership.
