The acclaimed British actor Idris Elba plans to move to Africa within the next decade. He aims to strengthen the continent’s film industry.

With roots in Ghana and Sierra Leone, Elba shared his vision at a recent film event in Ghana. He expressed a strong commitment to promoting African storytelling.

Elba wants to establish film studios in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Accra, Ghana. He believes being on the continent is crucial for making a real difference.

“I’m here to support the film industry, and that’s a ten-year process. “I can’t do it from overseas; I need to be on the ground,” he explained.

In addition, Elba will take on the role of Okonkwo in a TV adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s famous novel, Things Fall Apart.

Furthermore, even though some have raised concerns about his casting, he remains committed to using his influence to elevate African cinema. Additionally, he believes that this project can help highlight the richness of African storytelling.

The actor plans to live in various locations, including Accra, Freetown (the capital of Sierra Leone), and Zanzibar, to immerse himself in the region’s rich storytelling traditions.

“I want to be where people share their stories—that’s important,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of changing the narrative around Africa in global media. “Often, films portray only trauma—slavery, colonization, war. But when you come to Africa, you see a different reality. We must share our stories about culture, traditions, and languages,” he added.

Elba’s dedication to supporting and uplifting the African film industry reflects a growing movement to change how the world represents the continent in its narratives.
