Timaya Reflects on His Legacy, Faith, and Music Industry Insights

In a recent interview with African Folder, Afro-dancehall legend Timaya discussed his 20-year career, commitment to music, and industry insights.

Known for hits like “Dem Mama” and “Plantain Boy,” he shared how he has sustained his success. “I’m a fighter, I keep going,” he said, highlighting his resilience. “Among all the OGs, I’m the most consistent; I can brag about that.”

When asked about retirement rumours, Timaya made it clear he has no plans to stop making music. “My life is my career; a native doctor is a native doctor forever,” he explained, emphasizing that music is a core part of who he is.

On the topic of faith, Timaya stated, “I believe in God; I’m a Christian.” His spiritual beliefs often shine through in his music, especially in gospel-inspired tracks like “Ogologoma” and “Blessings.”

Timaya also offered advice to new artists. He warned against seeking instant fame and using drugs. “Drug is not an option; it’s an illusion. Build longevity,” he advised, stressing the need for commitment, strategy, and originality.

With nine studio albums, including his latest release, “Gladiator,” Timaya continues to solidify his status as one of Africa’s most influential musicians.
