Joke Silva Pushes for a Safe and Inclusive Film Industry

At the recent Women in Film and TV Conference in Lagos, veteran actress Joke Silva called for the elimination of sexual harassment and negative stereotypes in the film industry.
Moreover, as the President of the Forum of Women in Film and TV, Nigeria, Silva emphasized the crucial role women play in shaping the nation’s narrative. She also highlighted the necessity of a safe working environment for all.
In her remarks, she stated, “We need to eradicate all forms of sexual harassment in the film industry, as it harms our society in ways we may not fully understand.”
Consequently, Silva’s call to action underscores the importance of addressing these issues to foster a more inclusive and supportive industry.
Additionally, we must challenge negative portrayals in films that misrepresent reality. Increasing women’s representation in government is essential for creating policies that strengthen our position.”
Anita Duckworth-Bradshaw, a life coach, encouraged women who have experienced abuse in the industry to speak out as part of their healing journey.
She stressed that addressing past trauma is vital for making a meaningful impact in the industry. “We need to confront our pain to fully contribute to the film sector and to help replace harmful influences with positive ones,” she said.
Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, co-founder of The African Women’s Development Fund, highlighted the importance of viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.
She stressed the need to provide women with the right platforms to excel in entertainment, underscoring their vital contributions.
Beatrice Eyong, Director of UN Women in the country, emphasized the need for women to become indispensable in the industry so that their influence is both recognized and felt.
Furthermore, she advocated for supporting women in decision-making roles, as this would enhance their impact. In addition, she called for the adoption of guiding principles that would benefit the industry as a whole.
The conference included discussions on creating sustainable networks and improving the technological and structural aspects of the industry in Nigeria.
