Financial struggles despite career success: Actor Djimon Hounsou
Renowned Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou has opened up about his ongoing financial struggles, despite a successful two-decade-long career in Hollywood. In a recent interview on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, Hounsou candidly shared that, despite his achievements, he remains underpaid and continues to face financial challenges.
This revelation may surprise many, given Hounsou’s impressive career credentials, which include two Oscar nominations for his standout roles in Blood Diamond and In America. He explained, “I’m still struggling to make a living. I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially. I’m underpaid.” Hounsou’s financial situation defies expectations, highlighting ongoing challenges even for established stars in Hollywood.
In addition to discussing his financial difficulties, Hounsou also spoke out about his experiences with racism in the film industry. He recalled being overlooked for an Oscar nomination, despite receiving a Golden Globe nomination for the same role. This instance exemplified what Hounsou believes to be the persistence of systemic racism in Hollywood. According to him, while diversity initiatives have gained some traction, they still have a long way to go.
He elaborated, saying, “I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars because they thought that I had just come off the boat and the streets. Even though I successfully did that, they just didn’t feel like I was an actor to whom they should pay any respect.” Hounsou’s perspective underscores the long-standing challenges facing minority actors and the enduring impact of systemic racism in the entertainment industry. As he puts it, “This conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism won’t change like that anytime soon.”
