Jimmy Carter’s Body to Lie in State in Washington DC for Public Mourning
The body of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is being transported from his home state of Georgia to Washington DC, where it will lie in state before a large state funeral. Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, will be honored with a national day of mourning declared by President Joe Biden. As part of the ceremony, all U.S. flags are flying at half-mast on federal buildings for the next 30 days.
The public will have the opportunity to pay respects at the U.S. Capitol, where Carter’s body will lie in state for two days. A state funeral service will take place at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., with President Biden delivering the eulogy. Other former presidents, first ladies, and dignitaries, including Donald Trump, are expected to attend.
After the service in Washington DC, Carter’s body will return to Georgia for a private funeral in Plains, where he will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023. The ceremony marks the end of a significant chapter in American history, as Carter, the longest-living U.S. president, is remembered for his life of service and leadership.
Mourners from around the world, including high school student Ethan Cyganiewicz, traveled to honor Carter’s legacy. Ethan, who made the long journey to Atlanta, described the experience as deeply moving, reflecting on Carter’s extraordinary life—from his humble beginnings as a peanut farmer to serving as one of America’s most respected presidents.
Throughout this period of mourning, the public is invited to participate in honoring President Carter’s remarkable life and contributions to the nation.
