Halle Berry is speaking out about ageing, beauty standards, and the pressure women face in society. The Hollywood icon recently opened up in an interview with Fortune Magazine, revealing her frustration with the constant praise of her physical appearance. ‘I have longed for someone to say something other than ‘Oh gosh, you’re so pretty,’ she said. ‘I’ve longed to hear other words. I know I’m more than this.’
For Berry, her talent and achievements are far more important than the superficial comments about her looks.
The actress also reflected on the societal pressures surrounding ageing. She expressed frustration with the expectation that women must remain eternally youthful, forever stuck at the age of 30. ‘It’s a shame that society tells women they have to stay eternally young,’ she said.
‘We’re born to age and die, but as women, society expects us to do the unthinkable,’ Halle said. She believes this unrealistic expectation is turning women into ‘monsters’ as they try to defy ageing.
She aims to change the narrative by praising women for their age and experience, rather than labelling them as ‘old and haggard’ as society does.
Berry asserts, ‘Society may tell us our time is up, but I know we’re just getting our groove.’
Berry declares, ‘We’re just getting started.’
Halle’s advocacy goes beyond just words. She launched a wellness business called Respin to help midlife women. She is also pushing Congress to pass a bill that would fund research into menopause therapies. This shows her commitment to improving women’s health and well-being throughout their lives.
