Amid ongoing rumours surrounding his relationship with Dapper Music, Nigerian street-hop star Shallipopi has confirmed his exit from the label. The 24-year-old rapper, born Crown Uzama, made the announcement, explaining that his contract with Dapper Music had come to an end, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his career.
Shallipopi gained major attention in 2023 with hits like ‘Elon Musk’, ‘Oscroh’, and ‘Cast’. In 2024, he continued his rise with his debut album Shakespopi. He also collaborated with Rema on ‘Benin Boys’ and featured on ‘Juju’, a viral TikTok hit by Smur Lee and Odumodublvck.
The announcement of Shallipopi’s exit comes amid speculations that another street-hop artist, Seyi Vibez, has also parted ways with Dapper Music. As a result, this has fueled further discussion within the industry regarding the rising trend of artists seeking independence. Moreover, it underscores the shifting dynamics of the music business, where more artists are exploring opportunities outside traditional label structures. Seyi Vibez had caused a stir by wiping his Instagram account clean and updating his bio to reflect his ‘independent’ status. However, Shallipopi clarified that there was no bad blood between him and the label. He explained in an interview with Naija FM that the decision was mutual and part of his natural career progression.
Now focused on his next moves, Shallipopi is building his independent record label, which already houses a roster of talent, including his younger brother, Zerry DL. The rapper expressed excitement about the future, noting that he looks forward to the opportunities ahead. He’s eager to shape his career, collaborate with artists like Olamide, and create music that resonates with fans. Expect more collaborations, new releases, and a deeper look into his journey as he carves his path in the industry.
