Rema Sets the Record Straight on Devil Worship Rumors

Written by on September 23, 2024

Nigerian singer Rema is speaking out against the bizarre rumours that he worships the devil. These claims have surfaced online, largely due to the striking visuals in his music videos and performances.

In a recent interview on the Kids Take Over podcast, Rema called the allegations “the craziest thing” he’s heard about himself.

He clarified that the imagery and colours in his work are purely artistic choices, not a reflection of any beliefs. “The craziest thing I’ve seen online about me is that I worship the devil; they say I worship the devil,” he said. “It’s not important to respond to those claims; I feel like it’s a waste of time.”

Rema also addressed the confusion surrounding his “rabid phase,” which features a lot of red. He posed an interesting question: “If you see a beautiful lady in a red dress, you won’t call her the devil, so why are you calling me the devil?”

He further explained that his Edo culture significantly influenced his music and visuals. Rema expressed frustration over how some people label his culture as “devilish” simply because they don’t understand it.

“My culture, the Edo culture, is not one that the world has been familiar with… If they don’t understand it, they label it devilish,” he noted.

Ultimately, Rema emphasized that he won’t waste his time addressing these misinformed claims. “It’s one Google search away… So will I do the music, videos, and creative direction and still come and explain it to y’all? Hell no! That’s why it’s art; you see it and make a meaning for yourself.”

Rema’s message is clear: Art is subjective, and he won’t let unfounded rumours distract him from his creative vision.
