Tems Reveals The Truth Behind Her Hit Song ‘Higher’

Written by on August 26, 2024

Nigerian music sensation Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has dropped a surprising bombshell about her hit song Higher.

The revelation came on August 25, 2024, via her X page, where Tems disclosed that the song, featured on her 2020 project For Broken Ears, originally had different lyrics.

Tems’ Higher gained widespread recognition, and its hook was famously interpolated by American rapper Future in the Billboard chart-topping and Grammy-winning track Wait for U, featuring Drake.

However, Tems has now shared that the song’s original hook read “I won’t wait for you,” not the widely recognized “I will wait for you.”

The 29-year-old artist explained that the mix-up occurred because she performed the song in a British accent, which altered the lyrical perception. Despite this initial confusion, Tems has embraced the current lyrics, acknowledging them as the official version. In her tweets, she humorously confessed:

“Maybe now it’s time for me to confess that it was always ‘I won’t wait for you’ but I sang it in a British accent so it came out as ‘wun.’ It’s officially ‘I will wait’ now though. I just thought it was funny af.”

This quirky admission adds another layer to the song’s story and showcases Tems’ playful side. As fans continue to enjoy Higher and its impactful lyrics, the artist’s candid revelation only adds to the intrigue and charm of her musical journey.
