Remi argued that not every film labelled as “cinematic” truly deserves the title. Kunle Remi highlighted the common confusion between films meant for TV and those suited for the big screen.

“Not everybody understands what cinema is. He explained that this mix-up is why low-budget films sometimes appear in cinemas despite not being cinema-worthy. “There is a difference between a cinematic film and a film for TV.”

The actor praised Kunle Afolayan, the director of Anikulapo, for creating films with genuine cinematic value. He suggested that Afolayan’s expertise in cinema might not translate well to TV productions.

“Kunle Afolayan’s work, with its quality and style, is true cinema. If he were to direct TV films, he might not fare as well because his focus is on cinema,” Remi noted.

As an experienced actor, Remi can often spot when a film has been rushed or poorly executed. He admitted that while some filmmakers might label such films as cinema-worthy, he can easily tell when they fall short.

“TV films usually get done quickly, sometimes in just 5 days. As an actor, I can tell the difference. When I hear that a film is supposed to be for cinemas, I just laugh because I can tell it’s not up to standard,” he said.

Despite his critiques, Remi made it clear that he is not discouraging new filmmakers. Instead, he encouraged them to take constructive criticism in stride and not to compare their work to Hollywood standards.

“I can’t discourage anyone. Everyone has to start somewhere. He advised new filmmakers to stay open to constructive criticism and not be discouraged if people share their opinions or critics comment on their work. It’s all part of the learning process,” he concluded.

Remi, who gained fame after winning the 7th edition of Gulder Ultimate Search in 2010, has since made a name for himself in the film industry. His acting career includes roles in Ijakumo, Falling, A Naija Christmas, Introducing the Kujus and The Prophetess.
