Portable Refuses to Join Nationwide Protest, Urges Nigerians to Focus on Self-Improvement

Nigerian street pop star Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has made headlines with his decision not to participate in the upcoming nationwide protest.
The protest, set to take place from August 1 to August 10, 2024, aims to address grievances about the current state of the nation. However, Portable believes that Nigerians should prioritize personal development over activism.
In a recent video shared on social media, Portable explained why he won’t be joining the demonstration. He advised those planning to protest to instead focus on improving themselves and building valuable connections.
“If you’re busy with your own work and hustling, you won’t have time to join protests,” he said. “Fight for yourself, not for Nigeria. Nigeria is fine; it’s you who needs to get better.”
Portable, who gained attention for his performance during the EndSARS protest in 2020. Noted that his involvement at that time was due to his financial struggles.
He emphasized that his perspective has changed now that he is more successful. “Back then, I was influenced by poverty. Now that I’m wealthy, I think like someone who is successful,” he explained.
The singer highlighted the importance of focusing on personal growth and networking with influential people who can help advance one’s career.
He pointed out that wealthy individuals like Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola do not participate in protests because they concentrate on their own businesses and success.
“Have you ever seen Dangote or Otedola leading a protest? They focus on their businesses. You should focus on your own path too,” Portable said.
Portable’s comments have sparked a range of reactions online. Some people appreciate his call for self-reliance, while others feel that his stance undermines the purpose of the protest.
