Netflix has raised its subscription prices in Nigeria by at least 40%. This is the second increase in three months for Nigerian users.
“Increasingly, we are adding more TV shows and movies and introducing new features. Therefore, our plans and prices may change.
We may also adjust plans and pricing due to local market changes like taxes or inflation,” Netflix explained in a statement on its website.
Currently, Netflix offers four plans: mobile, basic, standard, and premium. The mobile plan, which allows one user on a mobile device at a time, now costs ₦2,200, up 83% from ₦1,200. The basic plan increased to ₦3,500 from ₦2,900 per month. The standard plan, offering HD quality on two devices simultaneously, rose from ₦4,000 to ₦5,000 monthly. The premium plan, providing Ultra HD quality on four devices and download options on six devices, now costs ₦7,000 monthly.
Despite being Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria represents only 10.5% of Netflix’s total African subscribers, according to Omdia Research. Netflix has also adjusted prices in other international markets such as the US, UK, and France.
This price hike coincides with Nigeria’s battle against rising inflation and a cost of living crisis. Earlier this year, other streaming platforms like Multichoice’s Showmax also increased their subscription fees, sparking public concern.
