Deyemi Okanlawon Opens Up About Instagram Follower Challenge in Early Acting

Deyemi Okanlawon revealed how his acting career was affected by not having many Instagram followers. He shared that his fortunes changed when Funke Akindele and Kunle Afolayan invited him to collaborate on their projects.

Speaking on a podcast hosted by Quincy Jonze, Okanlawon expressed how he faced rejection from producers due to his modest social media presence.

“Not having Instagram followers hindered me,” he admitted. “I questioned why I was judged by numbers instead of my dedication to acting.”Deciding to focus on building his brand, Okanlawon saw a turning point when prominent filmmakers like Funke Akindele, Kunle Afoloyan, Mo Abudu, and Niyi Akimoloyan approached him for roles.

He highlighted his lead role in “Omo Ghetto the Saga,” which became a box office hit in 2020, elevating his status as a top-earning actor.

When asked about his favourite actors in Nollywood, Okanlawon named Richard Mofe Damijo, Olu Jacobs, and himself as his top choices. He also mentioned Bimbo Manuel and Femi Branch as actors he deeply respects.

Reflecting on his journey, Okanlawon shared that acting wasn’t his initial dream; he aimed for greatness. He advised aspiring actors to diversify their skills and pursue their dreams boldly without limitations.
