2Pac’s estate threatens to sue Drake

The legal representatives of the estate of a renowned American hip-hop artist have issued a warning to Canadian rapper Drake regarding a recent diss track aimed at Kendrick Lamar, which incorporated an AI-generated rendition of the late artist’s voice. In a cease-and-desist letter delivered on Wednesday, attorney Howard King urged Drake to remove the track within 24 hours, indicating that failure to do so would result in the estate pursuing all available legal actions against him.

The contentious track has sparked controversy within the music industry, with many questioning the ethics and legality of using AI to simulate the voice of a deceased artist. The estate’s firm stance underscores the importance of respecting intellectual property rights, particularly in cases involving posthumous works.

Drake has yet to respond publicly to the legal threat, leaving fans and observers eagerly awaiting his next move in this unfolding saga.

“Not only is the record a flagrant violation of 2Pac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time,” the letter partly reads.

“The unauthorized, equally dismaying use of 2Pac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar, a good friend to the Estate who has given nothing but respect to 2Pac and his legacy publicly and privately, compounds the insult.”

On Friday, Drake unveiled the ‘Taylor Made Freestyle’, featuring AI-generated replicas of the legendary voices of the late 2Pac and Snoop Dogg. Following its release, representatives of 2Pac’s estate voiced their discontent, emphasizing that permission would not have been granted for such usage if Drake had sought it beforehand. This reaction underscores the sensitivity surrounding the posthumous use of iconic voices in contemporary music.
