Gift of Chess, a non-profit organization based in New York, is dedicated to spreading the love of chess worldwide by providing chess sets to communities. Recently, during a marathon event held at New York City’s iconic Times Square, Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya experienced a bout of intense vomiting and stomach pain. Despite the adversity, Onakoya demonstrated remarkable resilience and refused to abandon the marathon.
The marathon, which aims to break the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous chess game, features Onakoya and his counterpart from the United States, Shawn Martinez. Both players have committed themselves to the grueling challenge, pushing the boundaries of endurance and skill.
Gift of Chess wrote on X, “That’s #Tunde_OD curled over in pain. Yesterday, we did not think we could continue, as he was experiencing intense vomiting and stomach pain.
“When given the choice to quit, he said, ‘I will play on for the dreams of millions of children.’
“Tunde has never quit on the kids. Let’s not quit on him. Everyone who has liked a photo, we ask you now to donate.”
Onakoya’s goal is to engage in uninterrupted play for 58 hours against his opponent, Martinez, as the purpose of the attempt is to raise $1,000,000 to empower more children across Africa.
Onakoya’s determination to persevere despite physical discomfort has garnered attention and admiration from spectators and fellow participants alike. His unwavering focus on achieving the record serves as a testament to the passion and dedication that chess enthusiasts bring to the game.
The marathon, scheduled to conclude on Friday, April 19th, has drawn widespread interest from the chess community and beyond. As Onakoya and Martinez continue their marathon battle, supporters eagerly await the outcome, cheering them on as they strive to etch their names into the annals of chess history.
Through their endurance and determination, Onakoya and Martinez exemplify the spirit of chess, inspiring others to pursue their passions relentlessly. Their journey serves as a reminder of the profound impact that dedication and perseverance can have in the pursuit of excellence.
