Chelsea confirm arrival of Malang Sarr on free transfer

Chelsea has announced the signing of former Nice defender Malang Sarr. The 21-year-old center-back becomes Frank Lampard’s fourth signing of the summer, following deals for Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech, Leipzig striker Timo Werner and Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell.
Sarr arrives at Stamford Bridge on a free transfer after allowing his Nice contract to run down and Chelsea has confirmed that the Frenchman will spend next season on loan.
‘The opportunity to sign Malang was one we could not miss,’ Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia told the club’s official website.
‘He is a tremendous prospect and we will be monitoring him closely during his loan period, hoping he will soon be back at Chelsea. ‘We are very happy to welcome him to the club today.’
Sarr had been with Nice since he was five years old and went on to make 119 first-team appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, scoring three goals. The youngster has been capped eight times by the France Under-21 side but is also eligible to play for Senegal.
Chelsea has been keen to make up for a lost time in the wake of their two-window transfer ban and are far from finished in this summer’s market, despite the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis on club finances.
Free-agent Thiago Silva is expected to be unveiled at some stage over the coming days after his contract expired at Paris Saint-Germain. The Blues are also finalizing an agreement for Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Kai Havertz.
